Decorating for the Nigerian Climate: Heat, Harmattan Dust and Rainy Season
Nigerian weather changes through the year: hot and humid for months, dry and dusty during harmattan, then heavy rain. Your interior finishes should cope with all of it.
Heat and sunshine
- Curtains and blinds: choose lined or blackout fabric, or solar-style roller blinds, to cut glare and heat. This helps your AC or fan work less.
- Light colours on walls and ceilings bounce light and make rooms feel cooler.
- Fade-resistant fabrics last longer near sunny windows.
Harmattan dust
- Pick washable curtains and easy-wipe wall finishes such as PVC and WPC panels.
- Choose smooth or low-pile rugs that are easier to shake out and vacuum.
- Close windows with layered curtains during the dry season and wipe sills often.
- Dust fluted panel grooves with a soft brush.
Rainy season and humidity
- Fix leaks and damp walls before any panel, wallpaper or tile goes up.
- Pick moisture-friendly flooring such as SPC or good vinyl instead of untreated wood.
- Avoid heavy natural fabrics in rooms that stay damp. They can hold odour.
- Keep air moving. Ventilation protects furniture and fittings.
Power and noise
With generators and inverters in many homes and offices, LED lighting saves power, and acoustic or fabric-covered panels help soften noise in the rooms nearest to them.
A simple climate-smart checklist
- Blackout or lined curtains in sun-facing rooms.
- Wipeable wall finishes in busy and dusty areas.
- SPC or vinyl flooring instead of untreated timber.
- LED ceiling and accent lighting.
- A dry, ventilated surface behind every panel and wallpaper.
